Windjammer Weddings

It's one of the biggest days of your life. Think BIG.

Planning to get married this summer? Celebrating an anniversary or renewing your vows? If you're looking for a unique way to celebrate a milestone moment with that special someone, consider doing it aboard a Maine windjammer.

Most of the captains are licensed to perform weddings at sea or on shore. From intimate island nuptials to pirate-themed weddings, the captains are happy to help you plan the perfect ceremony. Invite your family and friends and charter an entire vessel for up to a week or leave the wedding party behind and enjoy a relaxing cruise along the coast of Maine. A few of the windjammers even boast honeymoon suites!

When a couple chooses to marry aboard one of the Maine Windjammer Association vessels, captains and chefs are available to take care of everything from baking the cake to performing the ceremony.

So cast off your wedding worries! We’ll take care of every detail with the same passionate attention we give to our classic windjammer schooners.

While there are no heart-shaped hot tubs or canopy beds, guests will delight in the natural beauty of the Maine coast, the rich experience of sailing a 19th-century tall ship, the delicious food and great camaraderie.

My love as deep;

Frequently Ask Questions

What is the Maine Windjammer Association?

The Maine Windjammer Association (MWA) is the largest fleet of traditional sailing schooners in North America. Built in the U.S.A., all nine windjammers are individually owned and operated by U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captains who work together to ensure the highest standards of safety, comfort, and professionalism.

Who Goes Windjamming?

Everyone! And once they come, they keep coming back, year after year. From newlyweds to retired couples, corporate retreats to family charters, our vessels welcome all who are looking for good times, good food and the unforgettable thrill of windjammer cruising. While minimum ages vary from boat to boat, guests from ten years and up will find the perfect cruise aboard the vessels of the Maine Windjammer Association.

How long do we sail? How often do we go ashore?

The boats' itinerary is largely dictated by the weather and the wind but expect to sail from 4 to 8 hours each day and anchor in a new harbor every night. There's plenty of time to go ashore to experience coastal Maine, whether it's a small fishing village or an uninhabited island.

Will we get sea-sick?

Probably not. While underway, the large size of these boats makes them stable and the cruising area is protected by thousands of islands. In the evenings, the boats anchor in sheltered coves so that even on windy nights, movement is minimal. Feel free to bring some Dramamine along, but you probably won’t need it.

Can we smoke or drink aboard?

Vessels provide ice chests for your beverages and request that alcohol be consumed in moderation. Smoking below deck is never permitted and several of the vessels have a no-smoking policy on the entire ship. Please ask your reservationist about your vessel's policies or visit the vessel's website from the MWA's Fleet Page.

How early should we make reservations?

For larger groups and charters captains encourage you to make your reservations as early as a year in advance for best availability. Most vessels reserve a week or two specifically to accommodate group requests, but if not used, captains will replace that space with individual passengers. Inquire early.

Can I bring my CPAP machine? How about cell/Wi-Fi service?

All of the windjammers can accommodate CPAP machines. Please make your request at time of booking. While a windjammer vacation is really all about unplugging, you may have cell service on the water depending on your carrier. Check before you leave home. Guests are encouraged to use their cell phones discreetly so as not to disturb the magic of the moment, though. There is no wi-fi on any of the Maine Windjammer Association boats.

I have a special diet. Will that be a problem?

All of the vessels can accommodate special diets; vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian or other. Simply inform your captain or reservationist in advance of your cruise and special meals will be prepared daily to meet your dietary needs.
